Filming on the Sunshine Coast
The Sunshine Coast carries a particular kind of light – bright, clean, and open. Noosa has its beaches and its slow tidal river. Maleny and the hinterland behind it have the green ranges and the long views out over the Glass House Mountains. It is a coast couples travel for, and one I am glad to travel to.
The light here is a little harder and clearer than it is further south, which rewards filming at the edges of the day. Early morning on the Noosa sand or beside the river is quiet and soft, and the late afternoon turns warm and low. In the hinterland the picture changes again – cooler air, mist on the ranges of a morning, and a green that the coast does not have. The two halves of the region film like different places, and both suit a patient, observational eye.
The Sunshine Coast sits a little north of the corridor I film most, so I take it on by request. When I do, the approach does not change. I film observationally, from the edges, and let the day lead. No staging, no oversaturated grade – the day as it happened, kept whole.
The seasons read clearly here. Winter brings the steadiest skies and the most forgiving light, with the low sun staying kind through the afternoon. Summer is bright and lush, with afternoon sea breezes on the coast and the chance of a storm building over the ranges inland. Autumn and spring sit in between, mild and even. Whatever the season, the light and the landscape do the work, and I simply watch.
The coast’s settings, seen through a lens
The Sunshine Coast offers two distinct kinds of setting, and each films differently. Noosa gives open coast, river light and clean horizons. Maleny and the Blackall Range hinterland give stillness, rainforest light and long views. Both reward an observational camera.
Up in the hinterland, Spicers Tamarind Retreat sits in the Maleny rainforest near Gardners Falls, with garden ceremony spaces immersed in canopy and the sound of the falls carrying underneath. Settings like this are made for the small, real moments – the light falling soft through the trees, the quiet between the vows and the kiss. The rainforest does the work; the camera watches it happen. The wider Maleny and Montville country offers hilltop settings with the Glass House Mountains laid out beyond them, where the geography becomes part of the story rather than a backdrop behind it.
On the coast, Noosa’s beaches, the national park headland and the slow river give a film open light and a generous edge to film from. Public foreshore and river settings read honestly on camera because they are not styled – the sand, the water and the sky carry the scene. Wherever the day sits, the light is the thing I plan around.
I name fewer places here than on the regions I film week to week, by design – the Sunshine Coast is a destination I travel to rather than a patch I know stone by stone. What I bring is the same eye and the same unhurried way of working, wherever the day is held.

- Maleny Manor, Maleny – a south-easterly aspect looks straight onto the Glass House peaks, with a covered pavilion that keeps the film going through wet weather.
- Tiffany’s Maleny, Maleny – floor-to-ceiling chapel glass backlights the vows against the ranges, with the panorama reaching Moreton Bay on clear days.
- Yandina Station, Yandina – heritage timber and open country light, paddock sunsets with coastal glimpses, and a barn warm under festoons after dark.
- Flaxton Gardens, Flaxton – an east-facing escarpment opens a coastal panorama by day, then twinkling coast lights after dusk, with garden arbour ceremonies in soft range light.
- Noosa Boathouse, Noosaville – a west-facing river aspect for some of Noosa’s best sunsets, with boat-arrival sequences and water reflections at dusk.
Planning your day on the Sunshine Coast
A few practical notes, from a filmmaker’s point of view.
Build the day around the light. On the coast the loveliest footage comes early on the Noosa sand or late in the afternoon, so a short window for the two of you at one of those edges is worth protecting. In the hinterland the sun drops behind the range earlier than the printed sunset, and the rainforest canopy softens the low light into dappled shade – a ceremony time chosen with that in mind always reads better.
Know your sunset time on your date, and plan around the coast’s afternoon sea breeze. I will have pulled the sunset number before the day so the timeline can shape itself around the best light.
